OmNom Zero Waste in Southport has taken part in a clean-up operation around the Marine Lake.
The innovative shop, on Wesley Street in Southport town centre, is keen to play its part in improving our environment.
OmNom Zero Waste, which was featured in The Telegraph last year, has over 100 products available unpackaged and stored in its refill dispensers. Shoppers are invited to bring their own clean, dry and empty containers from home and use the dispensers to refill as much or as little as they need.
On Sunday morning, OmNom Zero Waste owner Victoria Hughes was enjoying taking part in her latest litter clean around the lake.
She said: “Last week I finally got round to investing in a couple of bag hoops in anticipation of getting back out with Southport Coastal Clean Up Group.
“As I was up bright and breezy I took off to the lake with my sister Rebecca for what was meant to be a quick hour-long clean up.
“It turned out we were out for two and a half hours, but who cares when the sun is shining, you’ve got your music and everyone is in fine spirits?!
“We started off by Southport Pier / Southport Skate Park, walked across Ocean Plaza and then back down the side of the lake under the bridge.
“Although we only collected two bags full (know your limits), what was really great was the amount of people we got to speak to and the number of people who were grateful for our little effort.
“What I will say is the bins round there were full showing that for the most part I think people do clean up after themselves.
“Hopefully for those visiting the area, seeing a couple of people out with litter pickers and a bag rammed full of rubbish will make people think ‘actually yeah, we can be better and we can leave this place the way we found it’.
“We all want to enjoy what we are lucky enough to have on our doorstep whether that’s the beach, the lake or the pinewoods but that means we all have a responsibility to respect and look after it.
“I go out with the Southport Coastal Clean Up Group for beach cleans but nothing stops me going out and doing a bit for the community on my own or in this case with my sister.
“Obviously we had the appropriate equipment including a litter picker, bag hoops and gloves which I only needed to pick up some beer bottles left by the lake to make sure there was no risk of Covid etc.
“It was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours and the response from locals and visitors was so positive!”
