Holy Trinity Primary School takes first prize in regional Eurovision Song Contest

Congratulations to Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School, who have been awarded first prize in the School Improvement Liverpool Eurovision Competition for their rendition of ‘Waterloo’.

To celebrate the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, School Improvement Liverpool asked schools from across the Liverpool City Region to enter a video of pupils singing songs in a foreign language.

Thirty-two entries were received in total, and Holy Trinity’s entry was chosen in first place.

The entries were judged on presentation, musical performance,  difficulty on the song in relation to age-group, clarity of the lyrics, and how well the Eurovision spirit was captured.

Working in partnership with Holy Trinity, Southport BID filmed the performance and published the finished video through the Your Southport channels.

Holy Trinity serves a diverse and vibrant local community in the heart of Southport town centre.  An wide-range of different languages are spoken by students, and their rendition of Waterloo contained sections in Polish, Portuguese, Romania Spanish, Latvian and Lithuanian, Malayalam.

Headteacher at Holy Trinity, Linda Thompson said: “We are absolutely delighted to be named as the winners of the Eurovision Song Competiton by School Improvement Liverpool.

To be told that our video represented the true spirit and diversity of the Eurovision is fantastic. We are very excited to spend our £250 prize on a wonderful Spanish themed day next year.”

The students also brought their award-winning song to the stage at Southport Calling in May, alongside dance routines from other Holy Trinity students and a performance from the Holy Trinity Church Choir.

The Southport Calling festival saw a jam-packed line-up of local bands, groups and artists come together to celebrate Eurovision coming to the Liverpool City Region.  Visitors flocked to the Lord Street Bandstand to enjoy performances from Central Dance Studios, Birkdale Orpheus Society, Coopers House Jazz Band, the Sing For Southport contestants and many more talented acts.
